There Always Comes A Time

There Always Comes A Time

There always comes a time
To break camp,
To douse the dwindled flame
And load the wagon.
No parting word or sign,
Only scattered ashes
And wagon tracks
Heading toward the next row of hills...
Where waits beyond,
Another morning meadow
Newly cast in green,
With wild flowers filled.

Train

Train

Time is a train of days,
Carloads of used moments speeding by,
Another and another and another,
Clickety-clacking over a cliff
Tumbling to an abyss of yesterdays.

Ten Million Years

Ten Million Years

Will this mountain stone
Where now I rest facing the eastern sky,
In ten million years
Still warm to a rising sun,
Will the meadow flowers in Springtime bloom,
The white puffed clouds still drift a sea of blue,
Will the rivers flow with waters clear,
Will the son of man still be here?

Finding

Finding

 Time will wash its whiteness
Across the colors of our pain,
And fade in pale shadows
The pleasings that we've known,
And rob the gains we've gathered
In our private stores,
And ware to scattered sands
Our carvings made of stone,
But love will last of all,
The simple finding for our hearts
A home.

Merry-Go-Round

Merry-Go-Round

I see a child filled with joy
On a playground swing;
I see an old man lost and alone,
A city street for a home;
And I wonder why
More is lost than found
On this Merry-go-round.

Day End

Day End

A billion years I have come
To see the lights and forms
Of the cosmic sea,
To feel the breath of particles in motion,
The heat of elements burning...

The day end rushes out to sea
From the western land edge,
Pulling darkness across the eastern sky.
I watch from the shoreline,
Unable to follow,
Unable to stop the lights decline.
I would hold on to this day,
Forestall another moment leaving,
Another diminishment.
But there is no hold to grasp
On the end of a day,
On the fade of the light.

And so I watch
As Time, the destroyer of moments,
Ticks down to another ending,
And the great giver of light descends
Behind a wall of darkening gray.
It does not pause,
Does not wait for dreams and wishes
To come true,
Nor care for the plans we pursue.

So many days have fallen
To the darkening sea...
I wonder how many are yet to be
As now the shadows lengthen,
And the darkness
Enfolds on me.

Boundless

Boundless

 We are points too small,
Too brief to measure
In a vastness immeasurable;
A boundless sea
Where no time or distance
Finds a shore.
